What is it like working as a Software Engineer?

January 2020
Software Engineer in Seattle:
Work life balance is good, but the pay is severely below average for software developers. The company has multiple job classes for essentially the same statements of work. Others enjoy higher pay than industry which masks the dissatisfaction of their developers. If you are a developer, only join Boeing for a max of 2 years and get out.

Refreshing to work in public employment. Uplifting to see focus on students as a product rather than the bottom line.
Software Engineer in Portland:
Pros: Everyone REALLY is focused on providing value and a better environment for the students. This is so different from corporate jobs as very few people here focus on career so much as the value they can bring to students.
Cons: Politics muddies effective work for long term planning. Every new voted in/appointed group has a different vision and this changes direction every few years. Decisions sometimes are based on political position rather than understanding of the possible role of IT. There is a lot of old thinking that IT is a cost of business rather than an essential facilitator is saving money.

Software Engineer in Milwaukee:
U will be underpaid like really underpaid, while you are there. Even with a year of excellent performance, they will not offer anything close to market rates. Even when they made the counteroffer it is subpar. Every now and then, u will get a feeling as if u are just another worker. Because people come and go within the company very frequently. How you are treat and get support is mainly due to who is your manager. I am fortunate that I have a rather stable year. In additional, since you are treated as a contractor, u r expected to know what to do already eventhou you do not know much. Some work are just routine like all you do is rinse and repeat for 6 months, u will feel brain dead and it's up to you to find more stuff to make it interesting. Company site is outdated, everything is funnels back to India. Ie. An email to HR would take weeks, at times there are items that they just refused to do until being pushed hard enough.

Software Eng. In Belo Horizonte.
Software Engineer in Belo Horizonte:
Pros: The city has a small-city feel although it's actually huge, and is not as crowded as Sao Paulo.
Cons: Many companies, mainly startups, tend to pay below-average salaries. Public transportation lacks quality and transit is chaotic when it rains.

Toronto - lots of opportunities but with high COL.
Software Engineer in Toronto:
Pros: Strong growth for engineering jobs in the city
Cons: High cost of living in the city. Some are leaving for the same salary elsewhere, but housing costs half as much
